More than 70 adults participated in the 2012 Road to Healthy Skin tour that kicked off in Raleigh on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the American Institute of Healthcare & Fitness (AIHF).  The Skin Cancer Foundation teamed up with local dermatologists and AIHF to offer free full body skin cancer screenings to the public in their 38-foot customized RV. The AIHF campus was selected as the national kick-off location because of its convenient location and affiliation with The Dermatology Center of Raleigh.

Of the 70 adults who underwent screening, ten people were found to have pre-cancerous lesions; nine participants had identifiable skin cancers, including three with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

“The results from this free, public event underscore the importance of people having yearly skin checks,” noted Carol Trakimas, DO, dermatologist, The Dermatology Center of Raleigh. “Young people and those with darker skin tones often believe that they are protected, but anyone at any age can develop skin cancer. The best way to detect and treat it effectively is through yearly screening.”

Carol Trakimas, DO, David Tart, MD, Rebecca Oyler, MD, Tamara Houseman, MD and Walter Gammon, MD, donated their time and services during the daylong screening.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually. Skin cancer is also one of the most preventable and curable forms of cancer if it is detected early. The goal of the tour is to save lives by detecting skin cancers early on and educating the public about skin cancer prevention by means of sun protection and the need for prompt, effective treatment.

Since the tour began in 2008, more than 13,000 people have received free screenings. More than 5,200suspected pre-cancers and cancers have been detected, including 239 suspected melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
